UP Bolsters Line-up with Paras, Magsanoc, Guiao, and Altamirano

No less than Benjie Paras, the 1989 PBA most valuable player and top rookie, is suiting up for the Total-Filoil-Flying V Homegrown Cup when it kicks off tomorrow at the San Juan gym. Paras would be playing for the alumni all-stars of University of the Philippines, the school he led to its first UAAP basketball title in 1986, along with Ronnie Magsanoc and Eric Altamirano.

March 18, 2006. Mark this date. The FILOIL FLYING V HOMEGROWN CUP kicks off at the San Juan Gymnasium, its official home venue. So what is this? Another sports event? Yes another basketball league, but, with more spice and uniqueness to it. Six schools have confirmed their participation; Ateneo, FEU, La Salle, Letran, San Beda and UP. Playing for their respective schools are the all-stars; former varsity players who wish to show the country that there is life after their school glory days. FORMER cage stars put on their old sneakers to represent their respective schools in the UAAP and NCAA in a tournament dubbed the Total-Filoil-Flying V Homegrown Cup. Commissioner Virgil Villavicencio said the competition will try to relive the hard court exploits of former standouts from Ateneo, De La Salle, Far Eastern, Letran, San Beda College and University of the Philippines, who later became attractions in the Philippine Basketball Association.
